Hilary Duff: Model | Muse | Mother. Talks ‘Younger’ & fitness for SHAPE.

Talk about making a comeback. Former Disney star & pop princess, Hilary Duff is now a bonafide fashionista, musician, model & starring in the new hit TV show Younger (by Darren Star, the same creator as Sex and the City). This is Hilary’s 2nd cover lately – from Cosmopolitan to now SHAPE mag. She flaunts her killer curves in denim cut-off shorts by GUESS Jeans.

The mother of one (3 year old son Luca) talks her fitness routine, her new show alongside Broadway beauty Sutton Foster, dieting & more. Catch some highlights below:

On her fitness routine: “I don’t do auto-gym. I go three times a week and mix it up every time. I work out with weighted balls, battle ropes, and big rubber bands. I do this thing with a sledgehammer where I swing it and hit a rubber block, and it gets out all of my aggressions. Everyone is like, ‘Uh-oh, Hilary’s got the hammer—get out of the way!’”

On dieting & guilty pleasures: “I rely on grown-woman food. I’d rather have someone pull my fingernails off than hunker down and go on an actual diet. It’s so hard for me!” Her character on TV definitely likes to partayyy, but just like all of us, after a cocktail or 2 you always get the ‘munchies’, lol, she says,“I love my wine, but when I’m really trying to lose weight, that’s got to go. Alcohol is a trigger to make bad choices, just like when I get too hungry.”

And, she also lovesss indulging occassionally: “The key to a happy life is cheese. It’s a real problem. I can’t say no to it! There’s a cheese shop in Beverly Hills, and my car is like a magnet to it. Luca is crazy about it, too. Love the cheese!”

On the pressures of body image: “There’s so much pressure to always have it together, and I’m not falling for it. You see supermodels who have babies, and the next week they look as if they were never pregnant. That was not the case with me. Some days I feel great, others I feel pretty normal, and that’s acceptable.”

On why she’s loving her new role on Younger: “I embrace the mess. I had to be careful not to screw up in public as a child actor. So on my new show, Younger—which is written by Darren Star, who created Sex and the City—it’s really fun for me to play Kelsey, a 27-year-old book editor whose personal life is a hot mess. She always chooses the wrong guy, drinks way too much, and has to cover for herself the next morning.”

Hilary has started some seriously cool looks, not to mention we’re totally feeling her ever-changing hair from sea foam to pink, her fashion must-have is all denim on denim: “I’m a sucker for denim! I probably own 30 pairs of jeans, but honestly, I don’t wear most of them. I rotate eight or nine pairs. My favorites are my Frame jeans with holes in the knees. They have a lot of stretch and cling to my legs.”

Hilary Duff kicks back in Brooklyn for her latest editorial / interview with ELLE Magazine. She’s a mom, fashionista, actress & now we can’t wait to see her reign over TV again with her upcoming hit show, YOUNGER. Hilary stars alongside Broadway babe Sutton Foster.

The former Lizzie Mcguire star chats motherhood, acting, modeling and living in Brooklyn.

On BK:  “I’d actually never been to Brooklyn before I started apartment hunting. Just having Luca here, I wanted a little more space so it just made sense. It’s quieter. I live in a really cute neighborhood with just enough not to be bored but not have the craziness of having 200 people on the street that are like all over you when you’re trying to walk out of your apartment.”

On her characters life in NYC vs Hilary’s:  “It’s fun! Because it’s never gonna be my real life. It’s definitely a character for me, but I feel like I relate to her in certain ways. She definitely has less—well, obviously, I’m a well-known person and people watch everything I do. Sometimes it’s annoying, but, for the most part, I live the way I want and do the things I want. I obviously try to be respectful of myself and my son and my family. I do care what people think. But I’m 27, and I know that it’s important to have fun. So, yes, Kelsey definitely has a more carefree life than I do, but it doesn’t scare me. It will never be my life, and I don’t want it to be.”

On body image: “I mean I’m in the same struggle you’re in every day. It’s a tough question, too, but however it comes across, it comes across. I just tell myself, ‘I’m 5’2″, I’m really fit, killing it in the gym, and doing crazy things.’ I love to work out, but I’m just not that concerned with being the skinniest person. I’m not a model; I’m an actress. I always feel like I’m in the five to ten pound struggle, but my life is so busy.  I’m just not that concerned, really. I’m normal and I’m perfectly happy being that way. Some weeks I’m like, ‘Man, my clothes are fitting so good’ and then some weeks I’m like, ‘I need to cut back on a few things,’ but that’s it. I don’t fall into the trap of having to be 110 pounds.”

Moms/Women in Brooklyn vs anywhere else: “There are plenty of women I work with who could be 21…or 41.

Adding, “I’ve learned that here in Brooklyn. With all the moms I’m like, ‘Wait a minute, Are you 20 or 50?’ I can’t tell.”

It’s amazing. So inspiring. [Laughs] And here I am in my five-pound battle. Actually, someone on Twitter the other day was like, ‘OMG, I just saw Hilary Duff. She’s adorable, but I forgot she’s a midget!’ I’m like, ‘That is not nice and not politically correct at all.’

On her stunning custom Carolina Herrera wedding piece: “I’m very much a fashion person. It was like going to any other market appointment and finding something I liked.”

Johannes & Olivia talk about their relationship, he says, “I had a feeling that she would be The One from early on. Six years later, I finally asked her to be my wife.” On his fave look for Olivia? “Lingerie,” he says, “But she also looks ravishing when she dresses for a night out!”

Olivia adds, “I think from the beginning we had a lot of respect for each other.” Was it love at first site? Well at first glance she noted he was “charming and intelligent.” She said,“For our first date he picked me up from The New School in the pouring rain. I had my massive golf umbrella, and I was in Converse and skinny jeans. He was quite the gentleman.”

Huebl said he noticed, “What a cute ball of fun she is.”

On being a mother to daughter Marlowe: “I was overwhelmed by how normal it felt. It was like, ‘There you are—that’s what I have been missing.’ Like we’re both in on something only we know. An amazing sense of being complicit with a little being.”

That time she had to ween herself off of her addiction to instagram: “It was the most addictive thing,” she says. “Every morning I’d wake up and there would be a thousand more followers or whatever and there would be these amazing greetings like ‘Welcome! We love you!’ I’d be inflated by this nonexistent, intangible love. I was like, ‘I need to get off this.’”

The first time she appeared in the tabloids .. with Jude Law: “I’d gone to the Tate with Jude [Law] and his son. We’d started seeing each other, but it wasn’t known. I remember leaving his house the next day, getting into a cab, and this cabdriver saying, ‘I take it you haven’t seen News of the World today.’ I was like, ‘Sorry?’ And he said, ‘You’re all over it.’ He threw this newspaper with me on the front of the paper. Having a . Quite an overwhelming feeling.”

Taylor Swift is one ‘Lucky’ Lady.

“Who Rule The World? GIRLs.” Well maybe Beyonce should consider switching up her lyrics to ‘Taylor Swift’ instead of GIRLS! ha.

We love T.Swift’s city-chic style, let’s just say her recent move to NYC has definitely up-ed her fashion game. Of course, one interesting tidbit (that honestly we never noticed) is that she fails to show off her belly button .. which is pretty impressive seeing as her signature look is wearing crop tops. LUCKY magazine decided to ask Swift, ‘WHY?’

Her answer, basically she doesn’t want to make a fashion commitment to the ‘midriff thing’:

“I don’t like showing my belly button. When you start showing your belly button then you’re really committing to the midriff thing. I only partially commit to the midriff thing—you’re only seeing lower rib cage. I don’t want people to know if I have one or not.” She laughs. “I want that to be a mystery. As far as anyone knows based on my public appearances, they haven’t seen evidence of a belly button. It could be pierced. They have no idea. If I’m going to get some sort of massive tattoo, it’s going to be right next to my belly button because no one’s ever going to see that.”

In other Taylor Swift news she’s basically reigning the music industry. Here are some highlights:

“So nice, we booked her twice! Pumped to party like it’s #1989 w/ @taylorswift13! #VSFashionShow,” Victoria’s Secret tweeted. Yup, you read that right. Homegirl had such a kick-a** performance last year at the VS Fashion Show they booked her again. Swifty will be performing with fellow musicians Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran, & Hozier in London the first week of December – but we all KNOW T.Swift is gonna kill it.

Oh, Taylor was named New York City’s new Global Welcome Ambassador & just a few days after that, she announced the dates of her 1989 World Tour.

She also booked a live performance at the upcoming American Music Awards.

 

Lastly, this blonde beauty has officially made Billboard History: Swift becomes the first woman in the Hot 100’s 56-year history to succeed herself at the top spot. CONGRATS Bae!

German actress/model/bona fide fashionista: Diane Kruger – looks stunning, boho-chic, & like one cool chick for her latest editorial with Harper’s Bazaar Australia. For the cover she looks fab in a CHANEL cruise ’15 collection piece – love the vibrant colors & prints – especially for a nice hippie touch this fall/winter.

For the November issue Kruger talks aging, the red carpet & fashion, of course.

Fashion: “Clothes to me are an external expression of a state of mind, or a reaction I want to get from people. Fashion is just a fun way for women to show our colors. Guys buy a car.”

Diane adds that she’s not afraid of aging, and ready to embrace it, “I want to age gracefully and I don’t judge those who get injections. But we can’t age backwards, so you have to embrace it sometime.”

Fame vs Red Carpet: “Red carpets are a stressful, bizarre situation. Imagine having all those people yell at you and take photos. Not the most comfortable moment. It’s ridiculous. Honestly, I just don’t care what people say. It’s not worth worrying about. I care about the film I’ve just made and what my boyfriend says when I walk out of the door.”

Recently, her longtime beau, actor Joshua Jackson, opened up about the question everyone is asking, Why aren’t they married yet?? His answer is sweet & honest:

“I can tell you why we’re not married: We’re not religious,” The Affair‘s Jackson told the November ’14 issue of Glamour. “I don’t feel any more or less committed to Diane for not having stood in front of a priest and had a giant party. We’re both children of divorce, so it’s hard for me to take marriage at face value as the thing that shows you’ve grown up and are committed to another person.”

Adding, “It may change at some point. We may get married.”
