Supermodel & savvy business woman Heidi Klum was just spotted in New York City at the launch of her lingerie collection, Heidi Klum Intimates. From Sports Illustrated to Victoria’s Secret & more, there really is no one who truly knows underwear better than Klum.
After being discovered by Z Management’s Thomas Zeumer at a modeling contest, her career skyrocketed – she was featured in the SI Swimsuit issue, followed by becoming a VS Angel for 15 years. Now, she’s still covering magazines, obv a catwalk queen, fashion designer, the host/judge of Germany’s Next Top Model, the reality show Project Runway, & America’s Got Talent, an actress, and so much more. Plus, she’s ranked 2nd on Forbes’ list of the “World’s Top-Earning Models”. Let’s just say, this modelpreneur seriously knows her stuff.
Klum talked with Marie Claire about being in the industry for over a decade and she gives out pro tips on rocking some seriously sexy lingerie.
Her number one model tip? Being confident. She says, “The key to feeling confident if you’re just wearing your lingerie is simply to find the style of lingerie that you feel confident in. Experiment with different bras to find a style that you know you look good in. It’s so important to try things on while you’re in the store and get measured regularly. So many women wear the wrong bra size, I always hear ‘I swear I’ve been a B forever’.”
She also talks how to be prep for a shoot, “Having body confidence kind of comes with the job. You just have to be confident and have your body ready, always. You never know what outfit you’ll be asked to wear on a shoot – they may say it’s a fashion story and then hand you a bikini. I always have to be ready to take off my clothes – imagine if I wasn’t prepared.”
Plus the importance of a great photographer, “My biggest body prep task though is to pick a really good photographer. Honestly, it’s my best modeling tip – I pick someone who will actually tell me what I look like, if I need to suck my stomach in a little bit, change the angle or arch my back harder. Some people on a set are too afraid to say something, but I’d rather people were honest and told me what they thought as the results will always be better.”
*Speaking of a great photographer — Philippe Reynaud recently shot Zac Posen for Downtown Magazine including other campaigns for top fashion brands! Here’s Posen & Klum getting ready for the Emmy’s 2014.
Heidi tends to play both roles of the model & art director on a shoot: “I won’t ever leave the set until I have the shot. Especially with things that I control, like my brand or when I do New Balance. I become the art director for the day too. I get on the computer and look at all the film and we keep shooting until everyone’s happy. Sometimes they’ll take four pictures and I’ll be like ‘you’ve got it already, c’mon!’’
On the longevity of her modeling career: “I’ve been in the lingerie industry for over 15 years now and test-driven pretty much every style on the market. It was a long time to be intensely working with one of the biggest companies in the world [Victoria’s Secret] so that experience has definitely helped me to understand what makes for great underwear and what doesn’t sell.’
Interestingly this German beauty isn’t a fan of the push up bra – which is surprising seeing as Eva Herzigova (another supermodel Thomas Zeumer discovered & managed) was the face & body for the iconic WonderBra ads!
“I’m personally not a huge fan of the push up bra, but I know it’s one of the biggest selling styles in the world. I understand that a lot of women do want that high cleavage and so I want give it to them – I’m going to be constantly reviewing what styles are popular.”
Klum talks the other big ‘K’ in the modeling / fashion / reality TV world: Kim Kardashian: “Kim Kardashian changed the look in the fashion industry, which is amazing and the media have totally backed her. I know that other women love to be more curvy – at the end of the day you have to live in a body that you feel comfortable in and that you love.”
Wondering how long she’ll be rocking lingerie? “I’m probably not going to be a lingerie model when I’m 60, but who knows – there have been a lot of amazing campaigns this season featuring older women. However old I get though, I’ll always be body confident. It’s just the way I am, I’m happy in my skin.”
Oh and did we mention that her intimate line got a little ‘scandalous’ yes, you read that right – Heidi’s collection was featured in the top show Scandal! But maybe not for sexy reasons… more like Olivia Pope being a bad-a** and breaking out of sitch using a bra… lol.
“Obviously I was very excited that Kerry Washington used one of my bras for ‘Scandal’ and [it was] a huge thing for me because everyone wanted to know what bra she used and it was Heidi Klum Intimates and I was like, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe she used my bra in that scene!'” Heidi told Access Hollywood.
“I didn’t know. It wasn’t like anyone told me before. It was afterwards [that I found out]. I was honored and happy, you know, because also it got my name out there in the lingerie world, so I was very happy about that.” Adding, “I didn’t know that you could break out of a room with an underwire, but, as you can see, you can make that happen.”
